Gudule – Wine Production in Brussels

A landless wine producer

Walking the paths of France and Navarre, I put on my Wellies, smelt the soil, sharpened my senses and nurtured my passion for wine. Then, one day, I decided to make this my job. Yet, owning no vineyards and living in Brussels, this would be a massive challenge. There was only one solution for me, bring the grapes in bunches to Belgium, for this is where I work, surrounded by my family and friends. My name is Thierry Lejeune and I used to be a printer.

If you can’t go to the vines,
bring them to you.

Brussels,
an emotional “terroir”

At Gudule we believe that a city integrates ideas and that wine brings people closer together. We regard Brussels as a unique terroir which blends well with wine. We are an urban wine cellar nestled within the hustle and bustle of a city with a strong desire for success. We produce, age and gather wines which reunites people. We accompany those who make Brussels what it is today, just like those who change the world. We are Gudule and we cultivate taste and colour.

The first wine from Brussels dedicated to its patron saint

Gudule was very young when she discovered divine grace. One evening, as she was walking home after a day of prayer, the flickering flame of the lantern which guided her footsteps blew out, plunging the beautiful girl into the night darkness. A devil was playing tricks on her and with his malicious breath, had summoned the shadows so that she would be lost. Gudule could have died, abandoning herself to the fatal destiny suffered by those who had trodden the same path before her, but Gudule had faith in this tiny light which revives hope when all is lost, and her lamp was reignited by a divine power. As a symbol of religious devotion, the people of Brussels chose Gudule as their patron saint, and we still carry that tiny spark which allows us to move mountains and hills.

Urban sustainable production

Our winery aims to exclusively produce organic wines mainly for local and direct distribution. By supplying us with our precious primary ingredient, our wine growing friends entrust us with the soul of their “terroir”. It is in the heart of Brussels that we strive to extract distillation. So yes, our winery isn’t in the middle of the vineyards but planted right in the heart of the city where we are most accessible. It is here, in the city centre, that we aim to maximise the value of our waste and by-products with our close partners. The circular economy in motion.

Gudule is a bit like a cooperative of wine makers who share their production and expertise.
